How Much Brightness Do You Actually Need?
Brightness is the spec everyone fixates on — and misunderstands the most. The underwater videographers we work with tend to use a rough rule of thumb like this:

VL16 A runs on a single high-power COB LED. A COB emits from one unified surface, so the light comes out smoother and more even, without the layered shadows or overlapping hotspots you sometimes get from multi-point arrays. On camera, that reads as softer, more natural light — a good match for close-ups of coral and soft-bodied marine life, where smooth tonal transitions matter more than raw punch.
VL16 B uses eight main LEDs plus four red and four blue auxiliary LEDs (8+4+4), pushing max output to 8,900 lumens. Stacking more light points gives you more raw brightness and wider coverage, but the footage tends to read a bit cooler and harder-edged, with more punch — useful for cutting through murky or low-visibility water.
In short: the specs are nearly the same — what actually separates them is the feel of the light. VL16 A leans soft and natural, ideal if you want a gentler, more organic look. VL16 B leans cooler and sharper, better suited to low-visibility conditions or footage where you want maximum clarity and punch. Think of it this way: VL16 A behaves like a softbox, VL16 B behaves like a spotlight — one flatters the mood of the shot, the other flatters the sharpness. Both also switch to red and blue auxiliary light, letting you observe marine life or shoot fluorescing coral at night without startling animals with a full white beam.
